Urban life is often blamed for today’s challenges. But with bold leadership and a long-term view, cities can still be the places where a fairer, more sustainable future takes shape.

Cities concentrate problems, but they also place people and institutions close enough to solve some of them together. A housing office can work with a school, a library can host practical training and a transport agency can respond to needs identified by local health services. Proximity makes those connections possible.

The optimistic case in this column is conditional. Cooperation needs capable public administration, stable funding and ways for residents to challenge decisions. A city becomes a force for good when it turns density into access and mutual support, while confronting the exclusions that density can otherwise intensify.
