A City Reinvents Itself
for a More Livable Future

Once defined by industry, Barcelona is transforming its waterfront, transport and public spaces to become a cleaner, greener and more inclusive city — a model for urban renewal in an age of climate and demographic change.

The Barcelona feature imagines a waterfront connection where an awkward crossing has separated residential streets from public space. A redesign combines safer pedestrian access, shade and room for local services. The project is examined through the journey of a resident reaching the waterfront, rather than through a view from above.

Public improvements can also increase pressure on nearby housing and businesses. The fictional plan therefore links changes to the street with measures intended to retain everyday uses and long-standing residents. A more livable future depends on who can continue to use the renewed area, not only on how attractive it becomes.

Cities Can Still Be a Force for Good

Urban life is often blamed for today’s challenges. But with bold leadership and a long-term view, cities can still be the places where a fairer, more sustainable future takes shape.
