Rethinking Housing for a Denser World
Cities are experimenting with more flexible, mixed-use and affordable housing to meet changing needs.

Cities are experimenting with more flexible, mixed-use and affordable housing to meet changing needs.
The housing proposal in this fictional district combines smaller private homes with shared rooms that residents can book for visitors, study or gatherings. Buildings can be adapted as household sizes change, reducing the need for every life transition to require a move to another neighbourhood.
Density alone does not guarantee affordability. Land costs, tenure, construction finance and long-term management all influence who can remain in the area. The proposal therefore pairs design experiments with clear rent arrangements and maintenance responsibilities, so flexibility does not become an excuse for insecurity or overcrowding.
