A More Confident Europe in a Stronger World
A perspective on the institutions and everyday choices that shape a more open and resilient society.

A perspective on the institutions and everyday choices that shape a more open and resilient society.
A stronger world is not simply one in which Europe has greater bargaining power. The argument of this edition column is that European capacity can support shared institutions: reliable emergency assistance, open research partnerships and agreements that smaller countries can use without choosing an exclusive political camp.
Confidence then becomes compatible with restraint. A government can defend its interests while accepting rules that sometimes produce inconvenient outcomes. For Europe, the test is whether its calls for cooperation are reflected in the way it funds institutions, handles disagreements and shares the benefits of its own growth.
