A More Self-Reliant Europe Is Within Reach
The institutions, investment and shared decisions behind a more resilient European security policy.

The institutions, investment and shared decisions behind a more resilient European security policy.
The self-reliant Europe proposed in this fictional opinion piece begins with capabilities that can be strengthened through existing partnerships. Shared purchasing, coordinated research and compatible infrastructure offer a route that does not require every country to reproduce the same resources independently.
Self-reliance also means being able to sustain a decision after the initial announcement. Budgets, skills and public consent need to survive changes of government. The argument therefore places as much emphasis on durable institutions and honest explanations of cost as on the appeal of strategic ambition.
