From green infrastructure to community-led renewal, cities are proving that a more livable, adaptive future is within reach.

The neighbourhood initiative in this fictional column begins with a residents’ map of problems that do not fit neatly into one department: a flooded path, an unlit entrance and an unused room. Bringing those issues together reveals small improvements that would support several groups at once.

Local action still needs institutional backing. Volunteers cannot replace drainage engineers, secure tenure or a dependable public budget. Resilience from below is strongest when residents have influence over priorities and public agencies remain responsible for delivering the services that make those priorities achievable.
